SSNZ Membership and Governance Change Proposal

This page is dedicated to providing stakeholders with comprehensive insights into the proposed changes aimed at enhancing the governance and operational efficiency of School Sport NZ. The proposal outlines a series of strategic amendments designed to streamline decision-making processes, foster inclusive member engagement, and ensure compliance with the latest regulatory standards. By navigating through this page, you will gain a deeper understanding of the initiatives set forth to empower our members and fortify the foundation of school sports across New Zealand.

Guided by our Strategic Plan and as part of our Strengthen and Adapt work, the SSNZ Board is undertaking a thorough review of our Eligibility Rules, Membership, Governance, and Disciplinary structures and processes. This review has been informed by best practice principles in sports governance and legal counsel from industry experts. Our aim is to ensure that the proposed changes align with these best practices while also being tailored to the unique needs of our organisation and the stakeholders we represent.

The proposed changes are driven by the need to address several key issues:

  • Representation and Governance: Ensuring that our membership structure adequately represents the diversity of schools and sports organisations involved in secondary school sports.

  • Operational Efficiency: Modernising our governance model to align with contemporary standards and improve strategic oversight.

  • Compliance: Updating our Constitution to comply with the new Incorporated Societies Act 2022, which mandates compliance by April 2026.

  • Inclusivity: Expanding our membership criteria to include alternative educational environments and other key stakeholders, fostering a more inclusive and equitable approach to school sports.

  • Member Engagement: Enhancing member engagement through clearer roles, voting rights, and participation in decision-making processes.

We believe these changes will better align SSNZ with best practices in governance and membership, ensuring we can effectively serve our stakeholders and fulfill our mission of enriching the lives of rangatahi through sport.
